Mystery Drones Over US Military
Who is spying on them?
Pentagon officials are baffled by a series of unexplained drone incursions over restricted airspace at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
For 17 nights in December 2023, drones flew in precise formations, including fixed-wing drones at 100 feet and numerous smaller, commercially available drones underneath.
An even larger drone would scout the area at high speed.
Despite their efforts, US Air Force personnel couldn't catch the drones or shoot them down due to federal laws.
These incursions are alarming because the area houses sensitive facilities, and detecting the small drones via radar proved challenging.
Officials remain uncertain about who is behind the incursions, with suspicions ranging from hobbyists to hostile foreign actors, as the frequencies used differed from those of off-the-shelf drones.
This incident echoes a similar one over US nuclear facilities two months earlier, raising questions about the responsible parties and their intentions.
