Archaeologists have uncovered a 2,200-year-old tomb in Giugliano, Italy, known as the “Tomb of Cerberus,” featuring murals of the mythical three-headed dog and sea-centaurs.

Inside, they found a well-preserved skeleton shrouded and surrounded by grave goods, including ointment jars and a Roman hygiene tool.

The tomb’s unique conditions mineralized the shroud, aiding preservation. Researchers believe the individual might be the progenitor of a prominent family.

Ongoing interdisciplinary studies aim to uncover more about the deceased’s identity, including DNA analysis and the origins of the shroud’s yarn.
